Swimmer's Report – English Channel
Direction: England to France

On the 21st July 2000, Anne entered the water from the Abbot's Cliff outside Dover. The conditions were good, water calm, sea temperature 61 degrees F (16 degrees C).

Never having swum at night before, Anne found the darkness quite disconcerting. She swam strongly until the sixth hour when she developed cramps in both her legs and had to complete the rest of the swim with very little leg kick.

At 3pm the conditions changed, wind force increased to 4 and waves increased in height, Anne saw several jellyfish but was fortunate not to be stung. She was carried by a strong spring tide and landed three miles south of Cape Gris Nez, having swum a total of 37.5 miles. The time for her swim was 14 hours and 4 minutes.

Anne's biggest problem after the swim was severe sunburn, making sitting down uncomfortable for several days.
