Swimmer's Report – English Channel Direction: England to France
Shay began the swim at 4.25am on 19th July 1999 and finished at 8.20pm that evening. The swim started in perfect conditions, but in the fourth hour, conditions deteriorated and went from wind force 3 to 6. His projected time at three hours was under 11 hours but poor weather conditions slowed his performance. At times he could not get near the boat to feed.
An injury to his left shoulder became more and more aggravated as the swim went on, and the last four hours proved very difficult, but with continuous encouragement from his support crew, he finished on a deserted beach in Calais.
The swim had taken 15 hours and 30 hours.
