Martin Duggan Memorial Swim 2011 PDF Print E-mail
Tuesday, 26 July 2011 16:08

On Sunday, 17th July last, the annual Martin Duggan Memorial Swim was held on the Blackwater River at Fermoy. Despite unfavourable conditions, forty-two swimmers took part in this two kilometre freshwater race.

Of the forty-two swimmers, twenty wore wetsuits and a further twenty-two swam in their skin. Twenty-four of the forty-two swimmers were under the age of eighteen, making this the first ever competitive open-water swim in the Republic of Ireland where more than half of the participants were under eighteen, a far cry from the stereotypical image of the sport. There were twelve swimmers from New Zealand taking part in the race, also. The boys from Auckland Grammar School and their coach Graham Beaumont were on a tour of Ireland and the UK following their successful English Channel relay in early July.

Maria Murphy. Our loss is heavens gain
Monday, 04 July 2011 19:38
By now most of you may have heard the very sad news that one of our committee members Maria Murphy of Newry and Mourne has passed away.

On behalf of the Irish Long Distance Swimming Association we would like to send our condolences to her husband Hugh and her sons Stephen, Thomas and Patrick.

Maria was wonderful fun to be around and will be very sadly missed by the Irish Open Water Community.

Her bravery, tenacity and good humour stayed with her right to the end and she certainly left an indelible mark on the lives of those who knew her.

Carrick swim Race Report PDF Print E-mail
Wednesday, 15 June 2011 18:52

The conditions were perfect in Carrickfergus as the swimmers started to arrive at the sailing club at 1900. 11 in total turned up with 10 of those doing the 1k and a solitary 1 doing the 500m.

As the buoys were laid out 125 metres apart there was the usual "Nervous excitement" you get before any open water swim and as the starting time drew closer the "Why am I doing this" look become more prominent!!

The West Bay Swim Race Report!! PDF Print E-mail
Tuesday, 31 May 2011 09:06

With high winds expected on Sun it was inevitable that the West Bay Swim would have to be "Downsized" to the "Portrush Harbour Swim".

The course was laid out in the harbour with two buoys placed at the harbour mouth and a third buoy (Already in place) behind the lifeboat.

The swimmers then started to arrive at 1530 for registration in the Yacht Club and after "Numbering up" we all met at the harbour slipway for the safety briefing.

Presidents Thanks PDF Print E-mail
Monday, 20 June 2011 13:08

I would just like to thank everyone again who attended my tribute night on 29th April at the Radisson Blu Hotel in Belfast.

I realize that it involved time, expense and a lot of travelling for everybody so to see so many people there not to mention all the tributes that were sent was just beyond words...... It was a wonderful and unforgettable night which I shall treasure all my life. My heartfelt thanks to you all for everything.

And I would like to say again sincere thanks and gratitude to the committee for organising the evening and in particular to our chairman Stephen Millar who worked tirelessly "Behind the scenes" to make sure that the night was a success.

May I wish everybody the best of luck in the coming season, whether swimming or organising and keep safe going to and from events.

Sincerely

Billy Wallace
