Congratulations, Camlough! The Guinness World Record event held at Camlough has received official recognition for the world's longest relay swim! Additionally, the event won 2nd Place in the Open Water Events of 2010. Read the story here, watch footage of the event, or the press release below...
Camlough Lake, on the outskirts of the village, is well-known for its beautiful scenery and fishing, but during the 9th September to 19th September 2009, Swimmers took to the Lake to attempt to break the Guinness World Record for Longest Continuous Open Water Relay Swim. Verification of that event was received today 11th February 2010 from the Guinness head office.
The previous record, which stood at 480km, wasn’t so much broken as smashed by the Camlough Record Breakers who swam 685.5km over a total of 10 days.
The idea was the brainchild of local swimming enthusiasts Aoife McCourt-Lynch and Padraig Mallon, who enlisted the support of swimmers from across Ireland.
The driving force behind the success though, was the support and involvement of the local community. Media co-ordinator Maria Murphy said “The level of participation by everyone in Camlough and the wider South Armagh area was fantastic. This was a very serious and ultimately very successful attempt to break the world record for the longest continuous openwater relay swim.
The final swimmer completed the last lap of this marathon, world record-breaking swim at 10.55am on Saturday 19th September. It took 232 hours 52 minutes and 30 seconds to complete the total Record Breaking Distance of 685.5km. The people of Camlough and South Armagh will now get geared up for what was destined to be an equally marathon celebration of this fantastic achievement. Which will take place on 13th March 2010 in Carrickcruppen hall every one who participated in any way is invited along to the celebration.
Thank you for your support and coverage of this event as it was vital in providing the evidence we needed for verification.

Lisa Cummins of Cork became the first Irish person to complete a two-way crossing of the English Channel. Lisa started at 10.24am on Saturday from just South of Dover and finished on the south shore of Dungeness at 9.44pm - that is 35 hours and 20 minutes. This was Lisa's first Channel attempt, getting in the water without the experience of a one-way Channel crossing behind her. It is the longest distance covered by an Irish person in history. Lisa was supported by her mother and sister, boat pilot Lance Oram, tand the crew, especially Imelda Lynch who got in the water a number of times to keep Lisa company. To see the amazing distance Lisa covered log on to www.ais-doverstraits.co.uk and type in “Sea Satin”. For more information on Lisa log on to www.swimmingthechannel2009.blogspot.com
Owen O'Keefe, aged 16, from Fermoy made a one-way crossing. 10hrs 19min makes him the youngest Channel swimmer and a local record. He's the third fastest Irish person with only Conor Gunn from Northern Ireland and Julie Ann Galloway from Texas via Dublin faster than him.
Congratulations to Sylvain Estadieu, also of Cork (there must be something in Co Cork's water!) who also completed a one-way crossing.
Three fantastic and inspiring stories! Guinness World Record Attempt

*** July 2nd, 2009 The ILDSA proved themselves once again last night in a held at the Windsurfer's Pie, Co. Dublin in a race hosted by Carraig Masters. Thanks to the wise ticketing system utilised in the women's race, Rebecca Carr Nolan knew she came in 4th before she got out of the water. Richard Molloy accompanied her to the presentation at the Royal Irish Yacht Club of Dun Laoghaire where he learned he came in 3rd! Well done to Stephen Millar, Stephen Kealy, Alex Enriquez and Fero Erazmus who also participated in last night's race.

Congratulations to Mark Conran on winning the Glenalbyn Masters race yesterday evening! The race was held in idyllic conditions at Sandycove Harbour, followed by a celebratory jump into the 40 foot (it was Blooms Day after all!). This marks a great start to the swimming season for the ILDSA and builds on the achievements of Rebecca Carr Nolan last summer. Hopefully it won't be long until we're in the running for the team prizes. Well done, Mark! (Courtesy of Richard Molloy, 17 June 2009)
