Colleen Mallon wins the 17km Lake Windermere BLDSA championship In an impressive 4:09 min by beating some tough competition and comming in 2nd overall.

The Lake Windermere swim started in the 1950s and has been won by some of the best open water swimmers in the UK. But this year the cup is crossing the channel to Ireland.

Only one day after Stephen Redmond completed the North Channel swim another swimmer Anne Marie Ward completed the swim in 18 hour 59 minutesarriving in at 3:35 am. This is the fourth time Anne Marie's has attempted the swim and the second since August.

Conditions were ideal for the annual Island Dhu swim that took place on Sunday in a hot and balmy Portrush!!

12 swimmers turned up hoping to make it from the Harbour across the West Bay and back, a distance of 2k.

After the obligatory safety briefing the swimmers entered the water at 1420 and lined up in an orderly fashion just to the left of the slipway near the harbour mouth.

This year’s event had a good entry and very nice to see a lot of newcomers to this distance. With the growth of Open Water swimming especially in relation to the phenomenal growth in triathlons it is very important we nurture and entice as much participation as we can cope with. On Friday evening Declan O’Reilly brought up his rib, Cu na Mara, to the jetty at Carrybridge.

Originally from Castledermot, Co. Kildare, but now living in Ballydehob, Co Cork and a member of The Irish Long Distance Swimming Association Stephen Redmond swam his was into the history books last night,  by becoming the tenth swimmer to complete the toughest swim in the world (the North Channel from Scotland to Northern Ireland, Stephen swimming for his chosen Charity Irish Cancer Society left Scotland yesterday morning and arrived late last on the bangor coast Northern Ireland in 17 hours 17 minutes.

Credit goes to his support team and boat pilot Brian Meherg of Banger Boats, and also to his swimming comrades in the Cork Area like Mr Ned Denison Chairman of Swim Ireland All Ireland Open Water Committee whos responsible to making Cork the capital of Open Water Swimming in Ireland.

For the first time, Ireland will have two open water swimmers competing at a LEN European Championships.

Chris Bryan (who joined us for the Ballinagaul swim in June) competed in the 10km today and came in 32nd in 2hrs and 1min.

Germany's Thomas Lurz won the gold medal. The 30-year-old, who recently won the 5km world title in Canada, won in 1:54:22.5. 

Tomorrow Andrew Meegan and Chris Bryan are both in action in the 5 km swim.

UPDATE Ireland's two open water representatives Chris Bryan and Andrew Meegan finished 27th and 32nd in the Men's 5k swim at the European Swimming Championships in Hungary.

Bryan concluded his race in a time of one hour four minutes and 40 seconds. Meegan, who hails from Raheny in Dublin, took one hour six minutes and 58 seconds to finish the race.

Owen O'Keefe swims Straits of Gibraltar PDF Print E-mail

Owen swam the Straits of Gibraltar yesterday, Thursday 22nd July in a time of 3 hours and 52 minutes. Conditions were good-a bit windy but favourable.

Great swim Owen, well done...big congratulations from all at the ILDSA!! :)
